What is Filtration Soiling on Carpets?

I’ve been in such a funk lately, and the weirdest thing is how it all seemed to start when we tried cleaning up the house to feel better. I noticed these dark lines around the edges of the carpet—along the walls and under door gaps. At first, I thought it was mould or something gross, and that honestly made me feel even more overwhelmed. We vacuum often, but those lines wouldn’t budge. Now I feel like our place looks dirty no matter what we do.

Oh I’ve totally been through that! We had the same dark edges pop up in our guest room and it drove me nuts trying to clean them. I scrubbed and used every cleaner under the sun—nothing worked. Eventually I found out it’s called filtration soiling, which I had never even heard of. This article explained it really clearly—what is filtration soiling on carpets—and honestly, I felt a lot better knowing it wasn’t something I’d done wrong. We ended up having a pro come clean it with the right tools, but it helped me understand how airflow plays a part too.
