Leave No Trace: Motorhome and Campervan Etiquette

The freedom of the open road is one of the greatest joys of motorhome and campervan travel. However, with the rising popularity of van life, our favorite natural spots face increasing pressure. Practicing "Leave No Trace" ensures that fragile ecosystems remain pristine, local communities welcome travelers, and access remains open for future generations.

Plan Ahead and Prepare

  • Know Local Regulations: Research regional laws regarding wild camping, overnight parking, and vehicle access. Some areas permit overnight stays, while others restrict them to designated campsites or campervan stopovers (aires).

  • Be Self-Sufficient: Ensure your freshwater, greywater, chemical toilet capacity, and power options match the duration of your trip so you don't rely on inadequate outdoor facilities.

  • Have a Backup Plan: Popular spots fill up quickly. Always have alternative, legal parking locations identified to avoid parking unsafely or illegally when a site is full.

Travel and Park on Durable Surfaces

  • Stick to designated areas: Park only in designated laybys, official aires, campsites, or authorized wild camping spots.

  • Protect the flora: Never drive onto sensitive meadows, beaches, moorlands, or forest floors. Vehicle weight easily destroys vegetation and causes permanent soil erosion and ruts.

  • Avoid blocking access: Ensure your van never blocks agricultural gates, passing places, or emergency vehicle routes.

  • Protect Fragile Ground: Stick to established roads, gravel pads, or paved parking spaces. Heavy vehicles easily compact soft soil, crush vegetation, and cause lasting erosion.

  • Avoid Off-Roading: Never drive onto sensitive habitats such as sand dunes, coastal grasses, wetlands, or wildflowers to set up camp.

Dispose of Waste Properly

  • Greywater Dumping: Only empty greywater (from sinks and showers) at designated waste disposal points or campervan service stations. Never drain greywater onto roads, ground, or into watercourses.

  • Blackwater / Chemical Toilets: Never empty cassette toilets into natural bodies of water, public toilets, or standard storm drains. Use proper chemical disposal stations (Elsan points) or eco-friendly disposal facilities.

  • Pack It Out: Carry all trash, food scraps, and recycling inside your vehicle until you reach proper municipal bins. Do not overflow public street bins with residential campervan trash.

Leave What You Find

  • Preserve Natural Settings: Leave rocks, plants, historical artifacts, and natural features as you found them.

  • Avoid Modifying Sites: Do not clear vegetation, dig trenches around tires, or move rocks to create parking or leveling spots.

Minimize Campfire Impacts

Marshmallows Over Fire
  • Avoid Ground Fires: Fires on the ground can scorch soil, destroy roots, and pose significant wildfire risks.

  • Use Built-in Equipment: Use your campervan’s internal gas stove or elevated portable cookers rather than open campfires.

  • Follow Fire Bans: Strictly adhere to local fire restrictions, especially during dry seasons or in woodland and heathland areas.

Respect Wildlife

  • Keep Your Distance: Observe wildlife from inside or near your vehicle without approaching, surrounding, or feeding animals.

  • Secure Food and Trash: Keep all food and trash sealed inside your vehicle so scent doesn't attract animals or habituate them to human food.

  • Control Pets: Keep dogs on leashes around wildlife, livestock, and ground-nesting birds.

Be Considerate of Other Visitors and Local Communities

  • Respect Local Residents: Avoid parking directly outside private homes, obstructing views, blocking farm gates, or impeding narrow rural roads.

  • Keep Noise Levels Down: Keep music, voices, and pets quiet—especially late at night or early in the morning. Avoid running onboard generators in crowded or quiet areas.

  • Minimize Light Pollution: Use blackout blinds or curtains inside your vehicle at night to prevent light from shining into neighboring residences or disrupting local wildlife.

  • Support Local Businesses: Contribute positively to the communities you visit by purchasing gas, groceries, and services locally.

How do I find responsible places to stop?

Our team have created an interactive map listing thousands of stopovers across the UK & EU!

We have included campsites, aires, wild spots, showers, toilets, laundrys, LPG sales/swaps and much more.

We didn't stop at the EU either, our map covers the UK too!

Propane / LPG: Gas bottle connections differ across countries; carry appropriate adapters if refilling gas or swapping canisters abroad.

Pets: If traveling with pets, ensure health documentation and pet travel protocols are up to date.

Mountain Law: Between November 1 and March 31, winter tyres or snow chains/socks are required in designated mountainous regions.
