The Canterbury Motorhome Aire, seamlessly integrated into the New Dover Road Park and Ride facility, is widely considered one of the premier council-run stopovers in the UK. Located strategically just off the A2 highway, it serves as an ideal base for exploring the historic city of Canterbury, as well as a highly convenient staging point for travellers catching a ferry from Dover or using the Channel Tunnel.

Motorhome and Campervan Stopover Details

The Aire provides dedicated infrastructure tailored specifically for self-contained leisure vehicles. 

• Capacity & Pitches: There are 30 oversized, flat, neatly paved parking bays designed with wide turning circles to accommodate larger motorhomes. If the main Aire area fills up, a spacious overflow zone is available within the wider facility. 

• Pricing & Duration: The rate is £4.00 per 24 hours, up to a maximum permitted stay of 48 hours (with a 5-day no-return policy). 

• Site Access: The facility operates via an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. You collect a ticket at the barrier upon arrival and pay via card, contactless, or mobile payment at the automated machines inside the terminal building before exiting. 

• Access Hours: Vehicles can drive out and exit at any time of the night. However, the inbound entry barriers lock for arrivals during evening hours, usually restricting incoming access between 8:30 PM / 9:30 PM and 7:00 AM. 

On-Site Facilities

The utility-driven service point allows drivers to fully manage their waste and water resources: 

• Fresh Water: A dedicated clean water standpipe is accessible for refilling internal tanks (travellers must supply their own hose).

• Waste Disposal: The service area features a ground level grey-water drain grate and a dedicated chemical toilet (Elsan) disposal point for black waste. A separate tap is designated strictly for flushing and washing cassettes.

• Refuse: Multiple large dry waste and recycling bins are situated directly next to the service bay.

• Terminal Building: The on-site bus terminal houses public toilets that are open during the day (typically closing mid-evening, around 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM). Vending machines for cold drinks and quick snacks are also located inside. Note: There are no electric hookups (EHU) available on-site; vehicles must be self-contained.

• The Old Gate Inn: Situated directly adjacent to the edge of the Park and Ride car park, this charming, dog-friendly Vintage Inn pub features a spacious beer garden. It serves classic hearty pub meals, rotating cask ales, and coffees from early morning until late evening, making it a favorite for an easy arrival dinner.

• City Centre Dining: Taking the shuttle into town unlocks Canterbury’s dynamic culinary scene. Highly rated options include Lily’s Social Kitchen—a praised community café and social enterprise—and The Lady Luck, which serves excellent food alongside a rock-and-roll vibe and retro video games. 

Local Information & Getting Around

• Free City Transport: A major perk included in your £4.00 parking fee is unlimited, free return bus travel into the heart of Canterbury for up to six passengers travelling together in the vehicle. Buses depart roughly every 8 to 10 minutes from the terminal building, whisking you into the city centre in about 5 minutes.

• Dog Friendly: Dogs are welcome on the Park & Ride buses, allowing you to explore the town with pets. For exercise, a local bridleway path can be accessed just past the entrance roundabout for peaceful countryside dog walks.

• Canterbury Attractions: Once in the city, you are within walking distance of the historic Canterbury Cathedral, the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, and the iconic, leaning Crooked House on the high street. The cobblestone side streets of Butter Market Square offer a wealth of independent vintage boutiques, local markets, and cafes.
