Stoer Lighthouse, Lairg IV27 4JH

Stoer Lighthouse Car Park is a rugged, remote parking area situated directly beneath the historic 1870 Stoer Head Lighthouse in Assynt, North West Scotland. This coastal vantage point sits on a dramatic clifftop promontory, offering spectacular, panoramic views of the Minch and the wild Atlantic Ocean. Motorhome & Campervan Stopovers

Overnight parking for motorhomes and campervans is permitted, making it a highly sought-after wild-parking location for self-contained vehicles.

  • Access & Roads: Reaching the car park requires navigating a very narrow, rough, single-track road full of potholes. Driving large motorhomes down this track can be challenging; confidence and reversing skills are required to use the designated passing places.

  • Fees: Staying overnight costs a donation of £10, which can be paid using the physical honesty box or via a provided QR code.

  • Parking Rules: Because the Scottish Outdoor Access Code only applies to foot and bicycle traffic, vehicle stays are strictly limited to "parking behaviour". You must contain all activities within the vehicle—no awnings, outdoor tables, chairs, or fires are allowed. Always leave a safe 4-metre gap between vehicles.

On-Site Facilities

The car park is completely off-grid with virtually no modern facilities, meaning your vehicle must be entirely self-contained.

  • Toilets & Utilities: There are no public restrooms, electricity hooks, fresh water taps, or black/grey water disposal points.

  • Waste: There are no rubbish bins on-site. Visitors are strictly required to take all trash and food waste with them to preserve the local landscape.

  • On-Site Snacks: During the peak summer season, a local coffee van/food truck frequently sets up in the car park. It serves hot drinks, cakes, and quick snacks, though it closes early in the evening and shuts down entirely after September.

Local Information & Activities

  • The Old Man of Stoer: The car park is the starting point for a spectacular 4.5-mile round-trip cliff hike north to the Old Man of Stoer, an iconic 62-metre-high sea stack. The path is unmarked, boggy, and hugs steep cliff edges, so sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended.

  • Wildlife Spotting: The clifftops are phenomenal for spotting marine wildlife, including dolphins, minke whales, porpoises, and an abundance of nesting seabirds.

  • Nearby Beaches: A short drive away are the jaw-dropping white sands and turquoise waters of Clachtoll Beach and Achmelvich Beach. Clachtoll also hosts a dedicated campsite if you require full chemical waste disposal and electrical hookups
