Bike Base North York Moors is a family-run cycling hub, café, and accommodation venue located at Gribdale near Great Ayton. It provides bicycle and e-bike hires, holiday apartments, and serves as a major gateway to the surrounding moorland trails.

Motorhome and Campervan Stopovers

  • Official Network Membership: Bike Base belongs to the popular Brit Stops motorhome network, welcoming both registered members and non-members who book ahead.

  • Parking Setup: Overnight parking is designated on a gravelled car park. The site has a very slight natural slope, meaning leveling chocks or blocks are highly recommended for a perfectly level night.

  • Off-Grid Status: The entire site operates off-grid using solar panels and generators. Because of this, utility access is strictly limited. Vehicles must be fully self-sufficient with their own power, fresh water, and waste containment.

  • Facilities: Fresh, clean toilets are accessible to overnight guests, but only during standard daytime café operating hours.

  • Peaceful Atmosphere: Located well away from busy traffic, the site offers an incredibly quiet overnight experience with clear, dark evening skies perfect for stargazing.

Café Atmosphere and Dining

  • Cosy Internal Vibe: The indoor dining room features a rustic log-burning stove, creating a warm, comfortable haven for cold or rainy days.

  • Outdoor Panoramic Terrace: An elevated outdoor seating area delivers dramatic, wide-open views across the countryside. On cloudless days, visitors can view all the way across to the Yorkshire Dales.

  • The Menu: Food options focus on fresh, casual daytime bites. Highlights include substantial cooked breakfasts, homemade soups, fresh sandwiches, quiches, fresh scones, and a variety of gluten-free treats and vegan alternatives.

  • The Drink Selection: The café serves high-quality specialty coffee and a broad selection of loose teas, catering specifically to refueling walkers and cyclists.

Nearby Village Pubs

While Bike Base itself functions as a daytime café rather than a licensed pub, visitors seeking a traditional evening pub atmosphere can head less than two miles down the road into the main village of Great Ayton.

Local Information and Exploring

  • Roseberry Topping: The distinctive, jagged peak of Roseberry Topping is iconic to the area. Popular circular walking paths lead directly from the Bike Base car park up to the summit.

  • Captain Cook's Monument: This landmark structure stands on nearby Easby Moor, just a short trek uphill from Gribdale. It celebrates the famous explorer Captain James Cook, who went to school in Great Ayton.

  • Cycle Networks: The complex sits immediately adjacent to National Cycle Network routes 165 and 168. Terrain varies from relatively flat country lanes to the challenging mountain paths of nearby Blakey Ridge and Guisborough Woods.
